SOMA — The Dual Manifestation
A Double-LP. Two Records. Two Genres. One Story.
In 2006, these songs were written as upbeat, exciting visions of a future yet to come. But as they sat in the vault for twenty years, the passage of time revealed a hidden depth within them. Upon revisiting the lyrics, I discovered a sullen, reflective messaging that I hadn't fully grasped in my youth. The music shifted, naturally finding its home in the low-lit pulses of Electronic Jazz. It was the perfect landscape to finally introduce the clarinet—my favorite wind instrument—as a lead voice in this late-night soundscape.
Yet, the original vision of my younger self remained a persistent echo. It "nagged" at me, a reminder of the energy these songs were first born with. I realized that the evolution of NuDisco offered a bridge: it possesses the sophistication of the modern era while remaining laid-back and atmospheric, far removed from the commercial pop-disco of the past.
While the Jazz record captures the weight of the lyrics, the NuDisco record captures the heartbeat of the era they were written in. I wanted to satisfy that younger version of myself who wanted to dance, but with the maturity of someone who now understands that the best dance music is often the kind that feels most effortless.
The Mirror Expression
I chose not to choose. Instead, I created a two-LP experience where the past and the present exist in a perfect mirror.
• Record 1 (Jazz): A rebirth through warm circuitry, drifting pads, and the sultry,
jazzy delivery of vocalist Amica. It is a luxurious, late-night pulse for moments of reflection.
• Record 2 (NuDisco): The same songs, in the same order, reimagined with a rhythmic, upbeat energy. It honors the "exciting" spark of the 2006 sessions through a modern, sophisticated lens.
Which Version is Yours? Both records feature the same art, the same lyrics, and the same soul—but they offer two distinct tones of expression. I leave it to you to decide which suits you most. Perhaps the jazz for the rain, and the disco for the sun; or perhaps, like the memories they represent, they will both find a place in your life, depending on the mood of your day.
SOMA is a reminder that nothing is truly lost. Whether through a clarinet’s wail or a disco groove, the music was simply waiting for the right moment to be invited back in.
